Last night before I went to bed, Facebook was telling me to prepare for the worst. The father of our nation, Nelson Mandela, who has been in hospital for more than a week, is standing on the threshold between life and death. The Presidency said the old man was in a critical state. The nation started saying goodbye, getting ready for the inevitable death of a man who was more like a god to our people than any other man before him.

My mind inevitably went to the stories those on the far right have been telling us for years – stories about the “ethnic cleansing” terror that is planned for white people on the night of Madiba’s death.
